Repair works to the first floor balcony is being finished, the balcony to the front of the hotel main entrance (where the Victoria suite is located) has had "wonky" paving for years. During the repair works we have found out why, the stones rest on railway track (yes, old railway tracks) and iron spacers were used to level out the area of undulation during the original construction in 1845. Well these have rusted and expanded to 8 times their original size producing a "wonky" paving effect. We are now resolving this issue and a level balcony will return for what will probably be the first time in 90+ years.
Scaffolding to the rear, this is now well-on to being dismantled, however it did take 6 weeks to erect, so may take the next 2 weeks to come down.
Once that is done this page will be removed from the site. We thank our clients very much for their kind consideration, whilst we have been undergoing these repairs and renewals work. The last year has been a very challenging for the team in what is essentially a small locally owned owned and business.
15th September 2009
The new penthouse floor rooms are almost finished, with 16 already available for occupation. Solar panels on the roof are slowly being fitted.

31st August 2009
The Scaffolding to the front of the hotel is starting to be removed, just a couple of areas where rendering is still being finished. Scaffolding to the rear of the hotel is still in situ.
19th August 2009
Find below an image from a penthouse floor room taken this morning.

5th August 2009
The 95% of the scaffolding to the front of the hotel has now been removed. A small amount remains to enable painting of the annex section where we have been removing a disused chimney, this will improve the clear lines of the building. Below is an updated image of the new front of the hotel if you hover over the image you will be able to see a before and after, old rusty flag poles have gone and a new roof (and floor) is in situ, the Corinthian column tops are painted gold and first floor railings are now painted black and the views from the top floor are breath taking!
The first of the new rooms on the top floor ( the penthouse floor) are not as yet available for clients to reserve on the website, but they are available (subject to availability) if you call one of the team, telephone number at the bottom of this page.

3rd August 2009
The 95% of the scaffolding to the front of the hotel has now been removed. A small amount remains to enable painting of the annex section this next 2 weeks, after which it will be removed. The crane in the picture is lowering the solar panel uni-fix structure to the roof in order for the solar panels to be secured and capable of withstanding high winter winds, at the Crown Spa we are committed to reducing our carbon foot print more here.....

Apologies for the image quality but I just got back from climbing in the alps this morning and took the image on my phone, will update a new image shortly. Unlike the image suggests it was in fact too bright for the camera to handle the contrast zoning this morning.
During the roof repairs we have managed to refurbish the derelict store rooms into penthouse rooms of quality (per below).

26th June 2009
The Scaffold board removal has been completed to the front of the hotel, apart from the area of the colonnade where substantial repairs have taken place over recent weeks (see image from 25th May), we are hoping to remove these shortly. Removal of the scaffold boards has vastly improved the view from the front of the rooms.

The new roof with welsh slate and wooden windows. The roof will be supporting 25 solar panels which will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels by 90 tonnes per year; at the Crown Spa we are committed to reducing our carbon foot print more here....
25th May 2009
The works are progressing very well though we have found a large amount of rot within the central colonnade structure (as seen above), the timbers here have been in place for over 165 years! We hope the supplementary timbers being placed to support these will be there equally as long.
As you can see the gold fleck paintwork lifts the corinthian column as it was originally supposed to be envisaged.
25th April 2009
The roof repair works are going as planned and the 1st phase should be completed shortly. The stay enhancements implemented in early February 2009 for guests have been well received (details below).
25th March 2009
The main damaged roof structure is well in the way to being removed.
50% of the front of the building has been repaired and painted, below today the main crown emblem was painted.

Scaffolding being Erected
9th February 2009

The scaffolding is slowly being erected to the front of the building in a sympathetic way to still accommodate some sea views, in the coming weeks a large tent will be placed on the top of the building to make it water tight. Not all the building has been affected; the North wing ( front right side of the hotel) is unaffected by the roof damage and still provides glorious sea-views. The Fourth floor (a disused spare floor between the roof and the uppermost guest floor) is being laid with special sound and heat insulation boarding to cancel out any noise from the roof whilst the repair work is carried out. The scaffolding is set to be removed from the phase one of the roof repair schedule in mid-may 2009. The hotel is still operating efficiently and is unaffected operationally by the scaffolding. The guests who stayed this weekend were very supportive of the challenging work ahead in keeping this hotel the "Queen of the coast". We are sourcing as many of the materials and labour locally to support the local economy and are seizing this as an opportunity to obtain sustainable materials. As a starter to help make up for this unfortunate "Act of God" we are just finalising today a number of complimentary stay enhancements; to be released on this site tomorrow.
It was windy then the roof blew off!
5th February 2009
Whilst the rest of the country has been battling against the snow and wintry weather; Scarborough has managed to fair quite well from the snow. However, the winter is the season for spectacular storms and we have had some spectacular ones just lately.
On the eve of Sunday 1st February 2009 a big storm was hitting the east coast, unfortunately the Crown Spa Hotel's roof sustained serious damage and is presently being made safe ready for replacement.
The scaffolding took 3 days to arrange, erection took several days with more required later, unfortunately the winds picked up again by late in the week and erection was temporarily delayed. David Chambers Operations Manager said "We have had much greater winds in the the past but it seems this rare easterly wind hit the roof in such a way that a large portion was ripped off, this caused further structural issues to the roof which worsened over the next day and unfortunately the whole roof will need to be replaced, at a considerable cost; it was extremely fortunate that nobody was hurt." He further added that "This has forced the management to bring forward works which were scheduled to start at the end of the season. The works should take a total of 4 to 5 months to complete. Luckily there is a fourth floor that is disused, so there is a full floor between guests on the third floor and the work on the roof, keeping noise from the roof works to a very minimum."
The scaffolding has been erected in as sympathetic way as possible to safeguard views from the rooms. I hope that our loyal guests will be sympathetic to this unfortunate situation. The business continues to work as normal during the repair works.
Fortunately not all the front of the hotel is affected, the north elevation is unaffected due to this section essentially being a separate building on this Georgian terrace.
