26 year-old CRAIG CHALMERS was one of the most popular finalists in the recent hit BBC series Any Dream Will Do. Watched by millions every Saturday night, the show was produced to find a leading man for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new West End production, and Craig, chosen from tens of thousands of wannabees, charmed audiences week after week with his vocal talents, finishing in the top five.

Bill Kenwright, one of the most successful and prolific producers in British theatre today, (whose current hit West End shows include the musicals Blood Brothers and Cabaret and acclaimed drama The Letter), was on the expert panel of judges alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber, Denise Van Outen and John Barrowman and is delighted that Craig is taking on the leading role.

Sunday 14th December- Scarborough Symphony Orchestra: Night At Theatre

The Spa Grand Hall @ 7.30PM, Josephine Peach piano

The Thieving Magpie Overture Rossini Piano Concerto in C# minor Rimsky Korsakov The Snow Maiden Suite Rimsky Korsakov Sleeping Beauty Suite Tchaikovsky.
The Scarborough Symphony Orchestra consists of about 65-70 players, who between them give well over 6000 hours of their time every year to preparing public performances. They come from as far as Beverley, Helmsley & Guisborough.
Nowadays, we have an average attendance at rehearsals of about 60 and we currently present 5 public concerts per season. Our ever-growing audiences seem to enjoy our enthusiastic music-making, as well as our innovative and varied programme building, combining lesser known works with popular favourites. 20% of the seats are sold in advance to holders of our Golden Tickets. We have a policy of encouraging young people to discover real music; student players do not have to pay a membership subscription, and tickets to our concerts are free to children and full-time students. We gratefully acknowledge help and support from our Patron, Lady Ayckbourn, the Friends of the Orchestra and non-playing members. We would also like to say a huge thank you to our generous sponsors over the last year: Broadland Properties Ltd, Lady Ayckbourn, Scarborough & District Arts Association, Boyes Stores and an anonymous benefactor.
Tonight we visit the theatre. Rossini’s orchestral tour-de-force, the overture The Thieving Magpie opens our concert. Rimsky-Korsakov’s piano concerto is very rarely heard, which is a pity, since it displays all his usual melodic and harmonic gifts. We are pleased to welcome Josephine Peach to perform it for us.
The opera The Snow Maiden was written when the composer was in his late thirties,
and despite containing much good music (including, notably The Flight of the Bumble Bee) it has never gained a regular place in the repertory. Tchaikovsky, though a Russian composer, was not a member of the Nationalist school. His ballets Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty are all rich, tuneful and universally popular.

Friday 26th December- Scarborough Boxing Day Events

It’s a Scarborough tradition, a festive occasion which is termed 'Ladies Day'. There are various explanations, but the most commonly held one is that thefishermen's wives were given the day off to go for a drink after they had The Fishermen & Firemens Boxing day football match is Scarborough's oldest surviving custom - according to written evidence.Although this honour is generally given to the Shrove Tuesday Skipping, there in no contemporary evidence of the skipping until the early 1900's Whereas, annually from 1893, there are written reports of the Fishermen & Firemens Football match. Originally held on Xmas Day it was changed to Boxing Day in 1898.Still played on Boxing Day, on the South Bay Beach, the football match is a major fund raiser for the Fishermen & Firemen's Charity Fund - Which provides much needed help for the elderly & infirm during the winter months. Also throughout the year with raffles and charity evenings. The Charity was originally started to help the widows and orphans of the five Scarborough fishermen drowned at sea aboard the Evelyn and Maud.worked so hard preparing and delivering Christmas. Scarborough Sub Aqua Club Presents: Boxing Day Raft Race
Boxing Day in Scarborough is without doubt or exception my absolute favourite day of the entire year. As soon as it's over I eagerly anticipate next year’s, and plan for it for months in advance. As soon as December arrives, anyone I say hello to in the street asks, “You out Boxing Day?”, knowing almost inevitably the answer from most people is yes! It’s a Scarborough tradition, a festive occasion which is termed 'Ladies Day'. Many YBS Brass Band regulars rated last year’s concert as the best ever The YBS Band were proudly celebrating success at the British Open Solos last weekend. All three entrants from YBS Band went home with prizes against top draw competition. Jamie Smith continued to show his potential with a fine third place finish in the Under 17 section playing Abide with me. This was all the more commendable being still just 13 years old and one of the youngest players to compete. YBS Band Principal Tenor Horn Helen Varley showed her quality by stealing away the Tenor Horn Prize after a fabulous performance of Tyrollean Variations.

Under the baton of world renowned euphonium player Morgan Griffiths and with some of the most exciting new soloists around, award-winners themselves, the band goes from strength to strength.
