Crown Spa Hotel of Scarborough, has had its approach to the prevention of accidents and ill health recognised in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2012.
It has won a Silver award in the annual scheme, which dates back to 1956 and is the largest and longest-running awards programme of its kind in the UK.
The RoSPA Awards scheme recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. It does not just look at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.
David Rawlins, awards manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), a safety charity with a 95-year history, said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention. We congratulate Crown Spa Hotel on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”
CROWN SPA HEALTH CLUB WINS AWARD AT FIRST EVER
HEALTH CLUB AWARDS VOTED FOR BY THE PUBLIC
Crown Spa Health Club, based in Scarborough won a gold award at the Health Club Awards as voted for by customers across the UK.
The awards are unique in the health industry as winners are decided by members of health clubs who are asked to complete a questionnaire rating their own club on the level of service, facilities and value for money. Over half a million pieces of data were crunch from over 16,000 customers earlier this year.
Simon Brown, MD of Awards For Business who run the scheme said “Belonging to a good health club is a rewarding experience. Members probably spend more time there than they realise and it’s become an integral part of their lifestyle. For the club it’s not easy to get every aspect just right. It requires a lot of hard work from staff and a belief that members should have a great experience each time they visit. We maintain that clubs who truly offer the best service and experience are recognised and rewarded”.
The exclusive event which took place at the Hilton Metropole Birmigham was attended by 200 guests from shortlisted clubs who learnt their fate from presenter Mark Durden-Smith. Mark addressed the audience saying “these awards are a true reflection of how well you are doing what you do, and whether you are providing Good Value for Money. Your members can be your harshest of critics. They’re the front line, they experience your facilities and customer service on a daily basis and so they’re in a unique position to assess your performance”.
Stuart Russell Manager at Crown Spa Health Club said ““We were thrilled and excited to win the gold award, I would like to thank all the members who voted for us. Our aim is to offer a 5 star health club and spa facility and winning an award like this is proof we are delivering”

In 1845 the first purpose built hotel in Scarborough was finally finished. Standing prominent on the South Bay cliffs, with stunning views overlooking the South Bay, it continues to strive for the ambience that you would expect from a hotel of this calibre.
The Crown Spa Hotel offers high levels of comfort and service. Exhilarating views of the South Bay, castle headland and harbour all combine to make the Crown the Number One choice for discerning visitors. The Scarborough Spa Theatre Complex is close by and the town centre is a short walk away. The Crown Spa Health Club is an award winning private members’ and hotel guests club within the hotel and boasts a fully equipped gymnasium with qualified instructors. A range of activities is on offer: personal training sessions, lifestyle sessions, Jacuzzi, steam room, indoor pool, and aromatherapy. Crown Spa Treatments are also available: spa and beauty treatments in an ideal environment for relaxation, rejuvenation and total wellbeing. Dining in the Taste Restaurant offers a modern fusion of modern European and tasty traditional Yorkshire cuisine, using locally sourced ingredients where possible. The Crown Spa Hotel continues to provide Spa Treatments as was originally intended when it was first built in 1845.
Crown Spa in the 1960's
From time to time we all complain about how things are not as good as when we were young.
The tourism trade continues to be a major part of the local economy despite the current affordability of foreign holidays. While weekend and mid-week-break trade are tending to replace the traditional week-long family holiday, the beaches and attractions are always very busy throughout summer – and increasingly busier in the winter months when Scarborough is often seen as a peaceful bolt-hole from cities such as London, Manchester and Leeds. Confidence in the hospitality industry is high, evidenced by major refits in recent years to the likes of the Crown Spa Hotel.
