Over the past 4 years, the Crown Spa Hotel Scarborough has become a more sustainable business through sensible investment in affordable technology and innovative behavioural changes.
Richard Frank Managing Director said “Excellent news and confirmation of our last 4 years of hard work by our team, culminating in this year’s renovation works of our Grade 2 Star listed property taking into account the sustainable aims of our organisation and long term directional aims of Scarborough Borough Council’s Officers and Councillors. This year Scarborough won the award for most enterprising town and now we are a leading light in sustainable business”
David Frank Administration Director added, “Since 2005 we have reduced our direct fossil fuel derived Carbon Footprint by 25%.
Lowering your CO2 footprint is relatively easy you just need to
- turn things off when not needed at the mains,
- turn down the heat, and increase your insulation
- invest in cost affective technology (like Led lighting) with fast payback
The most challenging thing is to encourage team members to do the above
Now as an organisation we can afford to invest in more expensive technology with a longer payback (such as solar panels, biomass boilers and sine wave adjusters), and plough back some of the excellent financial savings from previous years for the future environment and further financial savings.”

May 2008 Awarded 4 Star Hotel by AA
A firstly a big thank you to the clients, suppliers and of course our work colleagues without whose hard work and dedication this achievement could not have been possible.
The Crown Spa Hotel in Scarborough is certainly celebrating this week, after being awarded a four-star rating by both the AA and Enjoy England the Awarding bodies for the Hospitality Sector. It is now the only 4 Star hotel on the Yorkshire Coast!
The first purpose built hotel in Scarborough and a leading venue and hotel for over 160 years; the Crown Spa Hotel is one of the area’s largest independently owned hotel. Over the last three years, it has benefited from a £6 million investment, which has dramatically transformed the hotel, giving it a stylish and contemporary new look.
The Crown Spa Hotel has recently completed refurbishment of bedrooms on two floors of the Hotel with the final phase of re-development on the third floor coming to a close, in the form of 4 luxury mini-suites, which are fully equipped with the very latest technology, including 32” LCD TVs and WI-FI access. The rooms are furnished with stylish fixtures and fittings with opulent soft furnishings and rich and luxurious fabrics and each have a lounge area to relax in. They also boast stunning en-suite bathrooms with unique details such as large baths with oversized showerheads and coloured lighting for that relaxing soak plus all the luxuries you would expect from a contemporary four-star hotel.
David Chambers, Operations Manager commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded a four star rating, it really is the icing on the cake for us, and is the culmination of four years of hard work by our dedicated team. Throughout the last four years we have been awarded the Investors In people award, won a National award for Excellence Through People and only last year won the regional award of Hotel of the Year for Yorkshire Moors and Coast.”
“In early 2004 we made a clear decision to transform the hotel into the region’s leading and most sophisticated destination for in-coming and out-going business and leisure travelers, and I believe our four-star rating is a testimony to that; and justifies the £6M investment that has gone into the property.”.
“We feel that we have identified a gap in the market, above the budget lodge establishments and away from the traditional “sea-side” accommodation offering; through the creation of a modern contemporary and stylish “city” hotel environment complimenting this listed building, combined with a relaxed atmosphere and perhaps, most importantly of all, the unique attention to detail, that keeps our customers coming back again and again.”
The Crown Spa’s attention to detail and quality permeates through the hotel’s offering, including the “Taste” Restaurants which are open to the public. The “Taste” team serve an excellent menu throughout the day, including the breakfast which is part of the Deliciously Yorkshire brand. It focuses on locally sourced, fresh, quality produce, providing guests with a real flavour of the Yorkshire region.
The Crown Spa also boasts excellent Conference & Event facilities, with flexible space for as little as 12 to 250 people and 24-hour conference packages are available all complimented by the superb award winning Crown Destination Spa and Health Club for that essential wind-down after the business is concluded.
Richard and David Frank, the Directors commented: “It is very important to us to keep building on our success, and to provide our customers with the level of quality and service that they have come to expect from the Crown Spa Hotel. With the completion of our luxury mini-suites and the other bedroom refurbishments, the new “Taste” restaurants and the recently opened Crown Spa Treatments Suite, we have dramatically increased our offering and set ourselves apart from other accommodation in the area. This is now truly complimented with being awarded the 4 star status that we have all worked so hard to attain. This is one more brick in rebuilding Scarborough’s Renaissance and the Yorkshire Moors and Coast Tourism Product”.
